SUDEP South trained more than 20 Tunisian officials in Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energies

More than 20 participants from the municipalities of Nabeul and Hammamet have participated in the set of trainings organized by SUDEP South Support Mechanism project. Representatives from both cities received a capacitation in Measurement and Verification, Monitoring and Evaluation, Energy Management Systems.

Three international consultants have trained the municipality officials in charge of the renewable energy, energy efficiency and project management. This set of trainings comes after a request from the municipality for this capacitation. As a special request on the framework of this European Union funded project, the municipality of Nabeul indicated their need in a training on the development of concept notes for future accession to EU funding’s. SUDEP South has successfully adapted to this request and provided the requested formation. Once finished, participants have received a nominative certificate of participation that has been handed over in a closing ceremony carried out by the Secretary General of the municipality of Nabeul, Yahya Abidi.

Mr. Abidi declared the importance of such capacitation for the municipality of Nabeul and thanked the European Union and the SUDEP South project for having showed to the municipality the path of the energy savings through energy efficiency and renewable energy.

In the framework of the SUDEP South project, the Nabeul municipality is implementing a pilot project on energy efficiency that will reduce the public energy bill in significant percentages:

  • -The photovoltaic system installed in the parking lot of the municipality will reduce the energy consumption in a 50 %.
  • -The photovoltaic system installed in the municipal water treatment system that will decrease the energy bill in a 25 % of the current spending
  • -The LED public lighting installation will reduce in 50 % the energy consumption in the district where it’s planned to be installed.

SUDEP-South project started its activities in early 2015 at 12 cities in 6 countries of the southern Mediterranean. The objective of the SUDEP Programme is to assist local authorities in responding to the sustainable energy challenges and to enable them to implement sustainable energy actions leading to energy savings, energy efficiency and more use of renewable energy sources such as solar energy.

SUDEP support mechanism activities are mainly focused on:

  • -Assisting the local authorities and reinforcing their capacities and their partners in the implementation of the demonstration projects.
  • -Promotion of the replication of innovative actions and the visibility of the programme’s results.
  • -Creation of the enabling environment for the exchange of good practices between projects beneficiaries
  • -Development of their own local strategies to ensure widespread dissemination and sustainability of their projects.
