On Thursday March 10th, twelve beneficiary municipalities of the SUDEP South project from the South of the Mediterranean visited the city of Ghent, a city considered at the forefront of European sustainable cities through its early commitment to signing the Covenant of Mayors. The group was welcomed by Tine Heyse, deputy mayor of Ghent (and responsible from Climate & Energy policy) who in conjunction with city staff proceeded to outline the efforts undertaken by the City of Ghent towards fulfilling its sustainability commitments. The SUDEP South beneficiaries were provided with detailed insights on the city’s climate policy plan, public lighting and urban planning initiatives, conversion of urban waste to energy, community and business engagement approaches in addition to the sustainable procurement policy. Having been impressed by the practices displayed by the City of Ghent, beneficiaries were keen on developing partnerships with Ghent and its associated network of partner cities to facilitate the exchange of information and best practices on various energy and sustainability related issues.
